Usability testing: Improving the user experience for a technical documentation site

Testing the effectiveness of a new navigation structure for a developer documentation portal called Teal.

Teal Usability Testing Hero Image ## Process: Plan I created a targeted usability test plan to evaluate how junior developers navigated the new site hierarchy. The most common workflow is saving a job posting and preparing a resume for it. We defined core tasks, such as finding specific API rate limit documentation.

## Process: Capture We conducted 8 unmoderated sessions. By leveraging tools like Snagit to document the user paths, we observed high friction specifically within the search bar and the sidebar hierarchy.

## Process: Deliver The findings were synthesized into a comprehensive success rate chart for each task and delivered to the engineering team via a detailed Figma feedback grid. Recommendations focused on flattening the navigation hierarchy and improving search metadata.

## The Outcome The Teal development team implemented 4 out of 5 of our core recommendations. This immediate integration led to a measurable decrease in "time-to-first-API-call" for new users onboarding onto the platform.
